Get Out Of Your Own Way

Updated: Jun 6, 2020

Have you ever wanted to change careers, go back to school, start a business or stand with Tattoo on Fantasy Island saying "the plane, the plane?"

You're thrilled by the idea of change. Won't it be great to do something I've always wanted to do. You tell your family and friends because you want to share your excitement.

Here it comes, "you have a good job, why would you want to leave it" or "you're just going through a mid-life crisis"

"Life coach? what the hell is a life coach?"

"We like you just the way you are and whatever you do, don't make me uncomfortable, stay small." wah, wah, wah...

Soon you start smoking what they're dishing out. You start thinking to yourself, "this is crazy, expensive and will take a lot more time than you initially thought. This is a bad idea." You crawl back to the comfort of your safe job that you absolutely loathe.

I was that person. Unhappy with my job, and I needed to make a change, a big change but couldn't figure "it"out. I tried and tried. I'd run it over and over in my head but always came up with a big goose egg.

You know how you think you're in control, LOL.

You figure you can just make it happen and force things in life but that never works. I wasn't any closer to knowing what I should do so, I decided to try something new.

I hired a life coach and to allow the Universe to take over my life, what the heck. I was tired and could use a good vacation from my mind.

One day while searching the web, a pop-up ad from the local university offering a program in Life Coaching appear on my screen.

Ok, was this the Universe guiding me or just great marketing? (don't over analyze it)

I filled out the required information. My heart started pounding and and quickly shut my computer down.

"What the hell was I doing? You're too old to go back to college? How can you keep up? Where are you going to get the money? Did I have enough intelligence to get a masters? Who do I think I am?"

The transition from wanting something to actually going for it, can be the difference between failure and success, according to bestselling author Jen Sincero, who wroteYou Are a Badass (one of my favorite writers and book) the number one thing that holds us back from change is ourselves.

Our self-doubt has a way of psyching us out, convincing us that we don’t have what it takes to get what we want out of life.

Sincero believes, that self-confidence is like a muscle; the more you use it and believe that you really can achieve whatever you put your mind to, the easier it becomes to have the strength to do even newer, scarier and more exciting things.

Long story short, I was a student again after 30 years of being out of college and fast forward, I graduated last fall with my masters in psychology. Saying "I'm psyched" will never be the same.

Significant life-changing decisions are hard to make. We all want to be the best we can be. It's not hard to "want" we all go around saying "we want this, we want that" but that's where most of us stop.

I'll say it again....DON'T STOP!

Go— do whatever you have been putting off, start the business, change your career, start painting, take that trip (when we are back to traveling again), write that book, call the guy, make the first move, learn to dance, help others....DO IT!

Build your Self-Confidence Muscle,

and Go Be a Badass!

But this doesn't mean you shouldn't ask for help. I hired a life coach to help me get answers to the tough questions.

Best decision.

I think I might still be "wanting" if I didn't make that decision.
