Do You Suffer From FOMO?
Updated: Feb 17, 2020
The question I get asked most often is about time management. In particular, time for yourself. That’s the problem, right?
Raise your hand if....
You’re trying to juggle everyone's schedules and meetings and social events and getting in a workout and a date night and, and, and… the list goes on.
Now 10X if you're entrepreneur and trying to grow a business. There is always more you can be doing....it never ends.
Want to know the secret that will CHANGE YO' LIFE. Ready for it? Ready? Are you ready, ready, ready?
I'll show you the secret (surprise!) time management hacks that helps me continue to get a 4.0 in grad school without going postal all the while building my coaching business, volunteering each week, and spending quality time with family and friends.
A chaotic morning, leads to a chaotic day, leads to a chaotic life! If you don’t organize anything else in your world, get your morning routine right. Time management is all about getting organized and sticking to the plan. If you want to get a jump on the day you need to get up earlier. Maybe sacrifice a little sleep or stop binge watching Gray's Anatomy for the third time. The beauty is you can use the extra hour for whatever you need: enjoy your coffee, meditate, make your to-do lists, write in your journal, get your workout in or pack the lunches and backpacks.
Get Your Priorities Straight
Make sure you’re doing the things that will give you the greatest impact in your life. Is it family, work, relationship...whatever? Only you can decide what that is. Only you can stick to your priorities. But if you don't know your priorities, you'll be wishy washy when someone invites you to do something you really don't want to. When you know your priorities, there is no question. The answer is either yes or no.
Multitasking is an illusion. People think they're getting things done faster but in reality, they are not. And not only are they not getting things done faster, they are putting out shitty work. You can't do your best work when you are not focused. Make your to do list and put a time limit on how much time it will take or how long you should spend on it....then stick to it. Another suggestion, if you do something every week like write a blog, make a checklist of all the steps you need to complete the project. For example: decided on topic, do research, write blog, edit blog, get someone to proof read, create art and graphics, download to mail chimp, send test out, proof again, update mailing list, proof one last time then hit send. Add it to Facebook, Instagram and website. Send out links.... Use the checklist and save time.
If it's not on your calendar then someone can come and take that time from you. Let's say you like to go for a walk each day at 3pm. It's a good time because you had all day to get things done and by this time you need to move and get some fresh air. You get a call from a friend wanting you to join her at 3pm for Happy Hour. What do you do? You have your walk on your calendar. You say to your friend, let me look at my schedule. You see you have scheduled a 60-minute walk at 3pm. Do you blow it off? What was the promise you said to yourself about exercising every day? Are you going to break that promise? Wouldn't't it be easier to say to your friend, sorry I'm booked but I could meet you at 5pm. Or even better, ask your friend if they want to go on the walk with you.
Step Away from the Phone.
Do you suffer from FOMO? Fear Of Missing Out. How can you get anything done when you're constantly looking at your phone when it goes ding. That intrusive ding that wants to let you know someone made a post on social media or you got mail. I bet if you tracked how much time you waste looking at your phone, you'd be (holy moly that's a lot a meatballs). It's time you can't get back. I get it if you’re a Kardashian or waiting to hear if your prize pig was selected for the state fair but you're not. You could check your email twice a day and social media once day and no one is going to wonder where you went... I promise.
How many opt-in's have you signed up for and now you get all these emails every day you'll never read. Stop the madness. You don't need it. I have a friend that says, you're either creating or consuming? What are you doing?
A filter is like a screen on a window. It lets in the fresh air but keeps out the bugs. You need to put up filters so the shit does not find its way to your in-box, text, social media, at work, at home... in your life. Filter...Filter..Filter..
Everyone has the same 24 hours a Day
Yup...no fighting it. That's all we get. TIME, It’s the most valuable commodity in the world. You can always get more money.... but not time. Use those 24 hours wisely.
Time management is not some mystery that you haven't figured out. No, what you need to learn is to take your time seriously as seriously as you do your money. Would you let someone take money out of your hand so easily. I doubt it. Come on. I hate to say it but you know it's coming.... You’re not going to live forever so don't be a people pleaser just to die with regrets because you didn't't spend more time with family or doing the things that matter.
With Love and Gratitude, Barbara
