Ah, New Year’s - it’s a time when most of us happily say goodbye to the previous year and welcome the opportunity of the next.

Maybe you had a good year or you can’t wait to say “see ya” to 2019 (like a bad cold). You're ready for another chance and ready to start the new year off right.

Self-reflection is a major growth opportunity—it can help you learn from your experiences (or fuck ups...we all have them) and feel more in control of our choices moving forward. NO sense beating yourself up. The past is the past. You can't do anything about it, change it or don't even get me going about hindsight. It's a bunch of BS. Wipe the slate clean, give yourself a break —The future is all you!

Here are 8 ways to start your new year off right. But before we kick 2019 out of our lives, take a moment and self-reflect. What will you remember about 2019? What was positive and you're grateful for? What did you learn and you're proud of? What are your dreams, wishes and hopes for the coming year?

Here are 8 Steps to Start the New Year Off Right.

1. Name the Year.

2019 was the year of ________________? Was it was the year of confidence (you took a leap of faith), the year of forgiveness (making peace with something huge), or the year of change (even baby steps towards that goal count for something). By defining your year, you give yourself something to focus on, and it pinpoints the largest takeaway that you’re carrying into 2020 (or the shit you want to forget). You can also name 2020. For me 2020 is the year of "FOCUS."

2. List three things you are grateful for in 2019?

No matter how the year went, there is always something to be grateful for in your life. Expressing gratitude can increase your well-being and help regulate stress, and even a small amount of effort to express gratitude can have a meaningful effect on the recipient of your thanks. Write them a thank you note or why not start a gratitude journal. There is proven social, psychological and physical health benefits from giving thanks.

3. List three positive things that happen 2019?

Psychology researcher Shawn Achor says our brains work in the opposite order. "If you can raise somebody's level of positivity in the present, then their brain experiences what we now call a happiness advantage. Your brain at positive performs significantly better than at negative, neutral, or stressed. Your intelligence rises, your creativity rises, your energy levels rise." This allows your brain to relive it, and teaches your brain that the behavior matters.

4. List three things you’re proud of that happen in 2019?

You can take it a step further and write it to yourself. I’m proud of myself for_________.

5. List three things you learned in 2019?

When was the last time you slowed down enough to think about what you accomplished in the previous year, what did you learn? Did you put what you learned into action? If not, make it happen in 2020.

6. List three adventures you had in 2019?

What did you do? Who were you with? Did you take photos? Where are those photos….on your phone? Why not share your experience or make a photo book. Then years from now you can relive the adventure. I just heard about Chatbooks to make your photo books, super easy and only $10 a book. click the link to watch the video...it's pretty funny.

7. List three things you’re excited for in 2020?

You cannot change the past, but the future is all you. Do you have goals you want to accomplish? Do you have a plan? Check out Marie Forleo's video and goal setting formula.

8. List three things you wish for? Your biggest craziest dream?

Whimpy wishes get whimpy results! Think Big. Dream Big. Believe Big, and the results will be BIG. Write them down every stinking day in your journal. Don't have a journal? There are so many options but my favorite place is Marshalls. You can pick up a rockin journal for under $5.

There you have it my friend. Wishing you a Very Happy New Year! See you in 2020!
